"The Birthplace of Drama" by Joe A Pecsenke

Title: The Birthplace of Drama
Artist: Joe A Pecsenke
Size: 60 x 72 in (152.4 x 182.88 cm)
Oil on canvas

A work of monumental surrealism, The Birthplace of Drama is considered by many to be J. A. Pecsenke's masterpiece. The work brilliantly evokes its theme with references to Egyptian, Greco-Roman and Modern architecture, depicting a world out of time and of infinite possibility. The Birthplace of Drama is Pecsenke's largest work measuring some 5 feet by 6 feet.

J. A. Pecsenke (1942-1989) was a native of Hungary, who lived in New York. His work combines the vital forces of both cultures––danger, sharp wit and eclecticism. Pecsenke's art celebrates his long-time experience as an actor and set designer. His work includes etchings of Commedia del Arte, Opera lithographs, and paintings inspired by the works of Shakespeare. It is in the private collections of Jeremy Irons, Joanne Woodward and Joan Fontaine, as well as in the public collections of the Metropolitan Opera, The Joffrey Ballet, The Folger Library, the New York Philharmonic, and Yale University.
