This small oil painting was based on an earlier watercolor study (1949; private collection) that Sylvia Sleigh executed while from the opposite bank of the Thames River. From the outset, she intended to create an oil painting of the building, which was already slated for demolition when she completed the watercolor in 1949. The oil painting was exhibited in her first solo exhibition at Kensington Art Gallery in 1953.
