Sylvia Sleigh seldom painted children. This unusual double portrait is even rarer for its depiction of infants. The fraternal twins, Max and Suzy, were born to Enid Irving in 1959. Propped against a pair of pillows in a large wicker basket, the babies resemble a still-life arrangement. The mottled, thinly painted background keeps the viewer focused on the infants and their meticulously rendered basket.
