Like Still Life with Decanter, this landscape was among the forty oil paintings in Sylvia Sleigh’s first solo show. The artist stood in the churchyard of St. Peter’s in Pett, looking past an imposing gravestone and a pair of weathered buildings toward the town of Fairlight in the distance. This particular view was evidently inspired by Lawrence Alloway, with whom Sleigh was amorously involved at the time. When he saw a sketch of her painting, Alloway praised its “spaciousness” and “all those interesting architectural objects.”
